Auction How-To: • 5 Highly Profitable EBay Niches

5 Highly Profitable EBay Niches

1. Vintage Audio Equipment- This will include old receivers, amplifiers, speakers, tuners, etc... Some brands include Marantz, Sansui, Pioneer, Klipsch, Kef and many more. You want to focus more on items made before the 1980's but over time you'll be able to get a better idea of spotting newer items. It is easier to spot pre-1980's equipment mainly by color and design. The picture above is a Sansui TU-717 Tuner. I paid $20 and sold it quickly for around $150. I could have made more on it at the time but I usually sell my items quickly and leave room for someone else to make money or get a good deal.

2. Ham Radio Equipment- This will include receivers, transceivers, speakers, etc... Some brands include Drake, Hallicrafters, Kenwood, Collins, Yeasu and many more. You want to focus on older equipment with tubes in it that look like crap. Mainly, this is because you can get the stuff for cheap and resale for high profits. With the kinds of items, at least with the older stuff, you don't want to try and fix anything or clean with any harsh chemicals. You just want to get the dust off and leave the rest to the buyer. You might want to do a little more detail for cleaning at times but it all depends on the value Above is a Drake TR-4C. Sometimes you'll find these with the speaker that will add another $100 onto the $200 value.

3. Film Cameras- This will include old cameras, lenses and flash units. Some brands include Nikon, Canon, Minolta, Contax and more. Nikon equipment is maybe the most desirable equipment that is commonly found. There are more styles of film cameras that are highly profitable like medium format but they are not commonly found for cheap. Above is a Nikon Nikkor 105mm f/1.8. This unit was purchase with a F3 Nikon camera and another damage Nikon lens for $60 total. The lens sold separately for about $250, Camera $100 and the other lens about $50. This is a pretty good profit I must say and is not uncommon.

4. Coffee and Espresso Machines- This will include coffee machines, espresso machines, cappuccino machines and parts. Some brands include Jura/Capresso, La Pavoni, Francis Francis, Krups, Cuisinart and many more. You want to first focus on where it was made. Espresso machines made in Italy have good value and are almost always worth your while. There are many different features and designs and the more you see them, the more you will get familiar on what has value or not. One thing to note is that almost any commercial looking espresso machine is going to be worth something but is all depends on your purchasing price. Note the extreme example below. Above is a Jura/Capresso Impressa S8 Espresso machine. It was purchased for $5, Yes $5, because it was leaking water. These machines have many issues and when you come across them you normally will be buying a machine that needs work of some kind. But... we sold this unit for $305 to someone that knows the issues of these machines and will continue to buy them because they can turn a profit by fixing them.

5. Used Office Equipment- Includes phone systems, laser printers, headsets, specialty machines, etc... Some brands include HP, Cisco, Nortel, Plantronics, Fargo and many, many more. This is a larger niche that really can be broken down into several different niches. You will find that businesses spend big money on new equipment and after they have used it for some time they will upgrade. If you are in the position to receive the equipment you can stand to make a lot of money in lump sums. The above is a Cisco 7941G Voip phone. This phone was purchased from a company that was upgrading their phone system for $25. I must say that it wasn't just one phone that was purchased but a total of 34 phones, 3 different models, with an average selling price of $75. Note that you can hold out for more money or develop a relationship with companies that buy this type of equipment and not have to come out of the pocket up front because these companies will pay you first in some cases. All of the above niches will allow you to achieve your goals and while this guide assumes selling on ebay as the venue, these are all perfect for building direct relationships with buyers that buy these items on a consistent basis. This allows you to sell items as soon as you get them with now listing fees and no final value fees.
